Our project entailed researching on culture based economies from a traveler’s perspective as in-dept research was not possible due to the paucity of time and finances. Our major stories for the documentary on culture based economies are from Assam, Meghalaya, North-West Bengal, Ladakh, Amritsar, Mysore, and Goa. In addition to documenting stories from the above-mentioned regions, we also went to Varanasi and Auroville in Pondicherry, but due to permission and ethical reasons, we were not able to shoot in these regions.
The idea of the documentary is to show how the culture of a place has been used strategically for sustainable income, promote, protect and preserve traditional and unique cultural practices from different parts of the country. The culture of a place adapts in dynamic ways to build economies for variegated reasons which result in creating workforce, income, and revenue for the state. The culture based economies that we have documented from our travel, have, in addition to generating income and revenue has also led to the creation of knowledge systems, social welfare, and social cohesion. These cultures seemed to have evolved with changing times and technologies which have to lead to innovation and creativity enabling competitive economies to materialize and sustain the current need of the glocal cultures.
