Visit to Sabarmati Ashram followed by interaction with Tridip Suhrud

Sabarmati Ashram The Sabarmati Ashram is a physical and historical reminder of the fact that Mahatma Gandhi chose Ahmedabad as the site from where he launched the struggle for Independence. That choice was strategically shrewd as Gandhi recognized that the business families of Ahmedabad would not only financially support the Ashram but also the activities of the freedom movement. It was from this Ashram that Gandhi also persuaded these very scions of the textile industry in Ahmedabad that a concern for the well being of their workers would also be good for business. The TLA or Textile Labour Association in Ahmedabad, the labour union that Gandhi helped set up, exemplified Gandhi’s strategy of negotiation and arbitration, instead of the resort to violent protest. Tridip Suhrud, Director of the Ashram and noted Gandhian scholar, helps the participants negotiate these various textures of Indian history associated with Gandhi.
