About

The Staff Development Cell (SDC) at the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IITGN), in collaboration with the Writing Studio (WS), offers a comprehensive certification program for non-teaching staff members to enhance their communication skills.

This certification program is a strategic investment in the professional development of our staff, ensuring that they are well-equipped with the necessary communication skills to thrive in their roles and contribute effectively to the institute’s success. Through the course, participants will:

  • Enhance Professional Communication: Improve written and verbal communication skills for effective workplace interactions.
  • Facilitate Personal Development: Empower staff members to express ideas clearly and confidently, contributing to their professional growth.
  • Align with Evolving Standards: Adapt to changing communication norms and standards in the professional landscape.
Program Structure

The Professional Communication Skills Certificate Program (PCSCP) consists of a diagnostic test and three levels for staff members. Certification requires completing all three levels and passing the associated exams. Participants can also directly pursue Level 2 or 3, based on their score in the diagnostic test. However, candidates must clear the examinations for the previous levels before appearing for more advanced levels.

Level 0 (L0): Diagnostic Test

Issued before the beginning of the course, the diagnostic test establishes a baseline of English language proficiency for all participants. In collaboration with the SDC, the Writing Studio uses these results to distinguish staff members for L1, L2, and L3 cohorts.

Level 1 (L1): Reading Skills and Grammar Enhancement

This 4-week L1 stage targets participants’ reading comprehension and grammar proficiency. 8 modules consist of lessons in summarizing, highlighting, note-taking, and reading comprehension techniques, as well as targeted sessions on grammar including tenses, subject-verb agreement, active-passive sentence construction, wordiness, and redundancy.

Graded self-paced exercises will help them improve their grammar skills.

Level 2 (L2): Writing Skills

The L2 stage, centering on cultivating writing skills for professional communication, encompasses 6 weeks. Following a mixed lecture-workshop model, 6 modules focus on the conventions of drafting emails, reports, and essays. Participants are armed with writing fundamentals that can be applied across media and purposes. They are also introduced to the know-how of using grammar checkers and AI in writing.

Level 3 (L3): Advanced Communication Skills

The L3 stage, spanning 4 weeks, offers comprehensive training in advanced communication techniques through a focus on speaking skills. Having completed L1 and L2, participants combine those lessons in communication workshops on public speaking, group discussions, elevator pitches, job interviews, etc.

Guidelines
  •  adThe certification is issued once a semester. Accordingly, all levels will run only once a semester, and the final certification will be issued to all successful participants at the end of that semester.
  • Certificates will be granted to participants who successfully pass all three examinations in the certification program. Alternatively, participants can directly pursue L2 or L3 certification upon completing the diagnostic test and examinations of the previous levels.
  • Participants are allowed to take the exams multiple times. However, if they fail the examination for any level, they can only proceed to the subsequent level with the next cohort.
  • The certification program follows a binary evaluation system, determining outcomes as either a pass or a fail.
  • The Writing Studio team organizes training sessions for each level, ensuring comprehensive skill development among participants.
  • Staff members gain access to self-paced exercises for L1, enabling them to learn at their convenience. For L2 and L3, they can additionally utilize the 1-on-1 tutorial hours provided by Studio.
  • The final certificate is issued to successful participants and signed by Prof. Rajat Moona (Director, IITGN), Prof. Jhuma Saha (Co-ordinator, Writing Studio) and Prof. Leslee Lazar (Chairperson, SDC).
