Focus School in Geotechnical Infrastructure Design
Infrastructure development is one of the main areas of development in the country, where Earth Structure and Geotechnical Engineering play a crucial role. Innovative design practices such as Land reclamation, Earth dams, Highway and Railway embankment, foundation system, underground facilities, etc., have common applications in the infrastructure development process. Such designs often face challenges due to variations in the soil conditions and need careful planning for the economic and safety of the construction, especially in peculiar earth conditions.

Programme structure
Program Duration: 14 Weeks
This focus school program will provide opportunities to the participants to work on real-life projects for infrastructure development especially focusing on the geotechnical design aspects. Student will work independently or in teams to create the design. Mentors (Teaching Assistant’s) will be available to help with the concepts, design alternatives, codal provisions and use of certain computer software for a complex analysis. Students will have to submit reports and make presentations on their final designs, which will be assessed by the instructors. Students will be defending their designs during presentations and they may be given a chance to re-submit the design in case of any significant concerns. This course will also have a few select laboratory experiments and a field-testing demonstration. Students will focus on 6-8 Geotechnical infrastructure design projects such as:

- Design of an Earth Dam
- Ground Improvement
- Foundation Underpinning
- Land Reclamation for Site development
- Construction of a Jetty on soft clay deposit
- Design of stone columns
- Foundation System Design (Shallow and Deep)
- Underground construction for Metro Rail Station
- Rock Slope Analysis
- Water intake structures in Reservoir/River
- Design of a cofferdam to divert river water

Eligibility
- B.E./B.Tech students who are in their final year or B.E./B.Tech students who have recently completed their graduation.
- The students must have successfully completed the UG level courses similar to Geotechnical Engineering-I (Soil Mechanics) and Geotechnical Engineering-II (Foundation design, slope, retaining structures).
Admission Procedure
- Application will be invited and scrutinized based on its merit.
- The final selection of candidates is primarily based on their overall academic credentials.
- The Institute reserves the right to use its own judgment while determining the candidate’s level of competency based on the available information.
Programme fee
Rs. 80,000 per student. This does not include the accommodation and food charges. Accommodation can be arranged in the IIT Gandhinagar hostel on payable basis upon request. Mess and canteen facilities may be availed by the students on pay per diet basis.

Certificate
The students will be awarded a Certificate upon the successful completion of the design projects with PASS grade. In case a student does not pass in any of the projects, they will be given a chance to re-submit the design in any project after a reasonable period.
