Ownership History

On September 20, 1878, G. Subramania Iyer, a school teacher in the Tanjore district, and M. Veeraraghavacharyar, a lecturer at Pachaiyappa’s College, started the Hindu as a weekly newspaper in Madras. The Hindu was one of the newspapers that began to fight against the British Raj and support Sir T. Muthuswamy Iyer’s campaign to become a judge in the Madras High Court. Subramania Iyer and Veera Raghavacharya were the newspaper’s first editors and managing directors.

In October 1898, Veeraraghavachariar and Subramania Iyer went their separate ways. When Iyer left, Veeraraghavachariar bought the newspaper and made C. Karunakara Menon its editor. Iyengar died in 1923, and in February 1934, Kasturi Srinivasan took over as managing editor and chief editor of The Hindu. Since the paper was started, the Kasturi family, which is the family of Kasturi Ranga Iyengar, has owned and controlled the editorial staff.

In 1991, Ram’s brother N. Ravi took over as editor. After N. Ram quit in 2011, his family, the Kasturis, fought over the magazine. Ram chose Siddharth Varadarajan to take over as editor-in-chief of the newspaper. He gave the reason that ownership and management should be kept separate. N. Ravi didn’t like this idea because it went against the newspaper’s tradition of having family members run the newsroom. After Siddarth Varadarajan quit, N. Ravi took over as Editor-in-chief, and Malini Parthasarathy became Editor of The Hindu. N. Ram became Chairman of Kasturi & Sons Limited and Publisher of The Hindu and Group publications. N. Murali became Co-chairman. On January 5, 2016, Malini Parthasarathy quit her job as an editor. The news says she resigned because of “wide discontent” with her work. She is still a full-time director at Kasturi & Sons Ltd. Currently, L. V. Navaneeth serves as a managing director, while Suresh Nambath is the current editor.

The Hindu has also been at the forefront of the media technology revolution. The newspaper was one of the first in India to develop a website in the 1990s, and it has since become one of the country’s most widely-read news websites. The newspaper also has a significant social media presence, with millions of followers on platforms like Twitter and Facebook.

The Hindu publishes regional language newspapers and webpages in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam, in addition to its English-language newspaper and online.

The Hindu has won various journalism accolades throughout the years, including the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting in 1999 for its coverage of India’s nuclear tests. The newspaper earned the prestigious “Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award” for “Outstanding Coverage of a News Event” for its coverage of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
