Project Introduction

1. A Digital Feminist Introspection into Social Media Activism

Aparna Nampoothiri – PhD Scholar (Humanities and Social Sciences)

This project studies the Facebook page Women in Cinema Collective as a case study to understand the reach and impact of online resistance initiatives through the theoretical lens of diaspora studies and digital feminism. By collecting information through data mining and analysing them through data visualization techniques, this project will look at the key features of respondents and participants on online platforms and study the dialogues and discussions generated through posts on a virtual group. Various aspects of digital feminism like the inclusion/exclusion of individuals or groups, language and cultural influences, fluidity or transgression between the offline and online manifestations of feminist activism will be measured through the posts and updates on the page, their reactions, share count and comments. As a small scale exploratory case study, this project will verify the relevance of social media in furthering the aims of feminism and women’s empowerment.

2. Semiotics, Digital Archiving, and Emerging Artists from India

Shivani Sharma – PhD Scholar (Humanities and Social Sciences)

The artworks are creations of an artist named as Suguresh Sultanpur. Suguresh  hails from the city Raichur in Karnataka. He has completed his degree in Masters of Visual Arts from Maharaja Sayajirao University, Vadodara in 2010. He is currently pursing his passion as a painter in Vadodara.  The project display the art works of a contemporary artist on a digital platform with an aim to preserve and disseminate his creations and his profound artistic sense which his art embodies. These pieces have been chronologically catalogued, semiotically analysed, and serve the purpose of presenting a coherent narrative of the artist’s creative journey.  Sultan’s artistry is expressed in three-forms namely; pencil drawing, painting and 3D photography. This digital archiving by presenting these forms in separate sections allows a viewer to partake of each genre in isolation and also offers an opportunity to juxtapose these forms to look for an intermeshed genre narrative. In a nutshell, this digital archive aims to present an artist’s creation in a mediated manner. The result is an experimental aesthetic experience for the viewer who may seek the original aura in this mediated art form.

3. Narrative mapping & Data visualization

C Bhavya – Doctoral candidate (Humanities and Social Sciences)

Note – The excerpts from the novel The Reluctant Fundamentalist are meant to be academic and critical in nature. This project intends to build analytical tools for understanding the novel for researchers and students who have not frequented the landscapes discussed by the author. They are purely used for academic purposes. The intention is to encourage close reading of texts.

4. Hyperpoetry Level 1.0

Srinjoy Ghosh – Doctoral candidate (Humanities and Social Sciences)

This project is an initial attempt to bridge the philosophical thought of ‘Continuum Theory’ and the concept of Hypertext through the use of poems that have the subject matter of ‘infinity’ as its core. Poetry of various cultural traditions and forms have been used in an interactive design base. The user has to find patterns to generate poems from the variegated data.

Note -The interpretations of the poems used are purely from the point of view of the developers and in no way should conform to a standardized meaning formation.
