Data Visualization and the South Asian Novel: Geospatial Narrative Mapping of “The Reluctant Fundamentalist”

C Bhavya – PhD Scholar (Humanities and Social Sciences)

ABOUT THE PROJECT

This project aims to study the confluence of literature, geography and digital mapping with specific emphasis on the fiction emerging from South Asian context. I have chosen Mohsin Hamid’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist as my primary text of study as its geographically-rich content falls in line with the project’s theoretical underpinnings. The user-friendly mapping tool StoryMapJS helps in fleshing out certain narrative thematic strands where it functions as an excellent pedagogic method in enriching the process of close-reading and in general, literary analysis. The narrative content of the novel behaves as data that enables its visualization through geospatial mapping thereby highlighting the transnational bent of South Asian fiction, especially those novels dealing with diasporic themes.

Note – The excerpts from the novel The Reluctant Fundamentalist are meant to be academic and critical in nature. This project intends to build analytical tools for understanding the novel for researchers and students who have not frequented the landscapes discussed by the author. They are purely used for academic purposes. The intention is to encourage close reading of texts.
