It was a very informative industrial visit. I had never seen Odiya and Bengali Pathachitras. Especially after seeing Odiya Pathachitras, I was astonished to see how the artists could make such intricate patterns and figures from the stories of Puranas. I realised how the visual stories can be read with its complexities and that they have impact us so much. Each story, each pattern made a mark on my mind. The experience of reading visual stories is so different from reading the verbal descriptions in the novel or a short story. I think this method of teaching certain subjects like history with the help of visual stories, should be used in urban schools to teach texts to the children. I was quite overwhelmed when I was showed the entire village establishment that was shifted from one place to another. The collection of the paintings was so impressive. I could see the influence of surrealism on the paintings. The installations set up at the Foundation were really unique. Especially, the one that was connected with wires and suspended with a fragile string. The technique of setting up such an installation seemed really unique to me. They had set up “bhongas” of Kutch and it was interesting when I was explained how they had designed them and that they had given some chemical treatment to the walls to prevent it from losing its look. Sugresh also explained a great deal about a brass installation designed by some tribal people. The ambience of the place was so serene, the ideal environment for a researcher who needs peace and proximity to nature to focus on the research. I think I would recommend that every batch should go for this visit.
I was happy to visit a place that really cares for the art and aesthetics in the current money-oriented trends. There should be such places set up for encouraging the artists that provide a platform to the artists to express themselves and exhibit their creativity. It was interesting to see that the artists also can stay there while working on their projects. I noticed several courtyards there on campus. I think these courtyards must be playing a vital role in facilitating these writers for interacting with each other.
It was also a great experience to see the printer and the types of paper that they use for archiving works of art. It made me realize how technology can be used to preserve these magnificent works of art.
The best part of this place is that it is close to nature. Watching the evening sunset at the riverside was an incredible experience. I think it is the ideal place wherein the artists can find their muse for designing their artistic creations. There is a spacious amphitheatre there. The painting on the yellow wall at the canteen is what I liked the most. It was marvellous. I was shocked to know that the artist had made that painting for free at the Foundation. It was really an enriching experience to go to UttarayanSa Art Foundation.
